(AP) ? Reflecting a war-weary nation, the Senate voted overwhelmingly Thursday for an accelerated withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan after more than a decade of fighting.

The strong bipartisan vote of 62-33 sends a clear message to President Barack Obama and the military as they engage in high-stakes talks about the pace of drawing down the 66,000 U.S. troops there, with a White House announcement expected within weeks.

Although the vote was on a nonbinding amendment to a defense policy bill, its significance could not be discounted amid the current discussions.

Thirteen Republicans, including Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, the top GOP lawmaker on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, backed the measure.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., its chief sponsor, argued that al-Qaida is stronger in other parts of the world and that nation-building in Afghanistan has gone off track. His measure endorsed Obama's timetable to withdraw all combat troops by the end of 2014 but pressed for a quicker pace, without specifying how that would be achieved.

"It is time to end this war, end the longest war in United States history," Merkley said during Senate debate.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday the U.S. will need to keep troops in Afghanistan even after the combat mission ends in 2014 because al-Qaida is still present in the country and is trying to strengthen its influence.

He would not say how many American troops he thinks will be needed to conduct that mission, nor did he mention a time period.

"The goal here is an enduring presence therefore that will direct itself toward three important missions. One is obviously counterterrorism to insure that we continue to go after whatever al-Qaida targets remain in Afghanistan," Panetta told reporters at a Pentagon news conference.

He added that the United States also will have to train and assist the Afghan forces while providing support.

The overall defense bill authorizes $631 billion for weapons, ships, aircraft and a 1.7 percent pay raise for military personnel. The White House threatened to veto the legislation in its current form, citing limits on the president's authority in handling detainees at the U.S. military facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and restrictions on cuts to the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.

The Senate hopes to wrap up its version of the bill by week's end. It then would have to be reconciled with the legislation the House passed in May. The House bill calls for Obama to maintain a force of at least 68,000 troops in Afghanistan through the end of 2014.

Late Thursday, the Senate revived last year's debate over how to handle terror suspects and whether restrictions interfere with the president's powers as commander in chief.

Lawmakers approved an amendment that would prevent the transfer of detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to prisons in the United States. The vote was 54-41, with several Democrats vulnerable in the 2014 elections voting with Republicans.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., argued that the 166 terror suspects, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-styled mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, should remain at the U.S. naval facility and not be transferred to any facility on American soil.

Responding to Ayotte, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the United States not only can but has handled terrorist suspects, with 180 now languishing in super maximum prisons. Feinstein complained that the measure would erase the president's flexibility.

"I don't think the right thing to do is to tie anyone's hands," she said.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., who had pushed for several of the provisions on terror suspects in last year's defense bill, said Ayotte's measure was "unwise in terms of our national security." He also warned that the provision was certain to draw a presidential veto.

In fact, the administration, in threatening to veto the bill, strongly objected to a provision restricting the president's authority to transfer terror suspects from Guantanamo to foreign countries. The provision is in current law.

The White House said the provisions were "misguided when they were enacted and should not be renewed."

Current law denies suspected terrorists, including U.S. citizens seized within the nation's borders, the right to trial and subjects them to the possibility they would be held indefinitely. It reaffirms the post-Sept. 11 authorization for the use of military force that allows indefinite detention of enemy combatants.

An unusual coalition of liberal Democrats and libertarian Republicans backed an amendment by Feinstein that said the government may not detain a U.S. citizen or legal resident indefinitely without charge or trial even with the authorization to use military force or declaration of war.

Feinstein recalled the dark days of World War II when the United States forcibly removed thousands of Japanese-Americans and placed them in permanent internment camps amid unfounded fears that they were spies and a national security threat.

Civil rights groups said the measure did not go far enough, but it was approved on a 67-29 vote with the backing of conservative Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Mike Lee, R-Utah.

The Senate eliminated one provision from the bill that had attracted White House objections. In a strong bipartisan vote Wednesday, senators voted to allow Pentagon investment in alternative fuels.

X-rays expose blueprint for possible sleeping sickness drug

Friday, November 30, 2012

Using the world's most powerful X-ray laser, scientists have exposed a possible Achilles' heel of the sleeping sickness parasite that threatens more than 60 million people in sub-Saharan Africa. The sophisticated analysis revealed the blueprint for a molecular plug that can selectively block a vital enzyme of the parasite Trypanosoma brucei. Plugging such a tailor-made molecule into the right place of the enzyme would render it inactive, thereby killing the parasite. The team led by DESY scientist Prof. Henry Chapman from the Center of Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL), Prof. Christian Betzel from the University of Hamburg and Dr. Lars Redecke from the joint Junior Research Group "Structural Infection Biology using new Radiation Sources (SIAS)" of the Universities of Hamburg and L?beck report their findings in the journal Science. "This is the first new biological structure solved with a free-electron laser," said Chapman.

The researchers had investigated tiny crystals of the parasite's enzyme cathepsin B with intense X-rays from the free-electron laser Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at the US National Accelerator Laboratory SLAC in California. "The enzyme had emerged as a promising drug target in earlier trials", said Redecke, one of the first authors of the scientific paper. "The knockdown of this essential enzyme in the parasite did cure the infection in mice."

But the same enzyme is also part of the human - and in fact of all mammalian - biochemistry, and blocking it has severe consequences. With their analysis the scientists could now pinpoint distinctive structural differences between the human and the parasite's form of the enzyme. "This should in principle allow for designing a molecule that selectively blocks the parasite's enzyme while leaving the patient's intact", explained the other first author of the paper, Karol Nass, PhD student at the Hamburg School for Structure and Dynamics in Infection (SDI), funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal State of Hamburg (LEXI), The researchers stress that while the finding raises hopes, a possible new drug is still a long way to go.

Sleeping sickness, or human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), is transmitted by the bite of the tsetse fly. The Trypanosoma parasites invade the central nervous system, and without treatment the infection is usually fatal. The disease occurs in 36 sub-Saharan countries and affects mostly poor populations living in remote rural areas. Thanks to intensified control measures the number of reported cases fell steeply in recent years, but there are still millions at risk. Current treatments of HAT rely on anti-parasitic drugs developed without knowledge of the biochemical pathways. They are not always as effective and as safe as desired, and the parasites are increasingly becoming resistant to these drugs. New drugs that selectively kill the parasite without affecting the patient's own organism would be of great use.

With cathepsin B the scientists applied a novel approach by investigating tiny crystals of the enzyme that were grown in insect cells in vivo. This way the enzyme was frozen in its natural configuration that includes a native inhibitor. Because cathepsin B works as a sort of molecular scissors cutting away at other proteins, it is produced by the cell in an inhibited form and only activated when needed. In the inhibited form a small peptide molecule is blocking the cutting edge of the molecular scissors. "With the peptide still in place we could peer below a previously impenetrable part of the cathepsin B structure ", explained Betzel. There, the analysis revealed significant differences between the peptide binding sites at the parasite's and the human form of cathepsin B. "This way, nature provided us with a blueprint of what an artificial inhibitor for the parasite's enzyme could look like." The next step would be to synthesise such a tailor-made plug and test it in the lab.

The molecular structure of the enzyme was solved to the atomic level by shooting bright X-ray flashes at the tiny cathepsin B crystals, which were only about a micron (a thousandth of a millimetre) in diameter and about ten microns long on average. Crystals scatter X-rays in a characteristic way that depends on their inner structure. From the resulting diffraction pattern the structure of the crystals can be calculated, in this case revealing the structure of the enzyme. Today, crystallography is a standard technique to analyse biomolecules. Usually, scientists use modified bacteria to produce biomolecules in large amounts and try to crystallise them into the largest possible sizes of high-quality crystals afterwards. The in vivo crystallisation pioneered at the labs of Betzel and Prof. Michael Duszenko at the University of T?bingen, who is also a member of the research team, employs living cells to produce crystals. In contrast to standard crystallisation experiments, only in vivo crystallisation yielded suitable crystals of cathepsin B in a natively inhibited form.

But the in vivo crystals are still so small that only X-ray lasers like LCLS are bright enough to produce sufficiently detailed diffraction images. The LCLS belongs to a novel class of scientific light sources called free-electron lasers that are based on powerful particle accelerators. In these machines, electrons are accelerated to high speeds, or energies, and are then forced on a tight slalom course. In every bend each electron emits a tiny flash, and all the flashes add up to an incredibly strong X-ray pulse with laser properties, that allows to resolve structures like the natively inhibited cathepsin B molecule.

To solve the cathepsin B structure the researchers had to record hundreds of thousands of diffraction images that were painstakingly stitched together afterwards. As each crystal is destroyed when hit by the powerful X-ray flash, the team fed a stream of crystals in a watery solution through a thin nozzle into the laser path. The X-ray laser fired away at 120 shots per second, where on average only every eleventh shot actually hit a crystal. This resulted in a total of 293,195 diffraction images recorded. These could only be processed with massive parallel computing, to first generate a three-dimensional map of the entire diffracting signals of the enzyme from which an image of its structure was calculated. The final result revealed the enzyme's structure with a resolution of 2.1 ?ngstr?m (one ?ngstr?m is a tenth of a nanometre or a ten-millionth of a millimetre). "Interestingly, this discovery comes exactly at the centenary of the publication of the famous X-ray diffraction equation by William Bragg in 1912," Chapman pointed out.

The team included members from DESY, the Universities of Hamburg, L?beck, T?bingen, Uppsala and Gothenburg, the Arizona State University, SLAC, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the Max Planck institute for medical research in Heidelberg and the Max Planck advanced study group at CFEL. CFEL is a joint venture of DESY, the Max Planck society and the University of Hamburg. DESY is the leading German accelerator centre and one of the leading worldwide.

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

DOES JEB BUSH CAIR TOO MUCH TO BE PRESIDENT? Former Florida Governor's appeasement of Islamists should be cause for concern in 2016

DOES JEB BUSH CAIR TOO MUCH TO BE PRESIDENT? Former Florida Governor's appeasement of Islamists should be cause for concern in 2016

Image

As talk of a Jeb Bush presidential run in 2016 is making news, perhaps some further inspection of his record as Governor is warranted. In 2001, Jeb nominated a conservative pastor named O'Neal Dozier to the Judicial Nominating Commission in Broward County. In 2006, Dozier was forced to resign by Bush's office over comments he made about Islam on a local radio show. The reason for Dozier's appearance on that show involved his objections to the construction of a mosque near his church.

Ben Barrack, conservative talk show host, writer, and author of the new book, Unsung Davids, which features an entire chapter on Dozier's battle with the Republican Party in general and Jeb Bush in particular, says that with the passage of time, Dozier's concerns about who was behind construction of the mosque are more than valid.

?The Islamic Center of South Florida (ICOSF) was the group behind the proposed construction of that mosque,? Barrack says, ?The ICOSF was owned by the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT), which was one of the unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation trial.?

Barrack contends that the forces behind the mosque warranted far more attention from the Florida governor than did the comments of a Florida pastor who was on one of the governor's committees.

?Instead of looking into the very legitimate concerns of his appointee, that appointee was forced out and left to fend for himself,? Barrack said.

Moreover, says Barrack, one year prior to Dozier's ouster, Jeb sent a very kind letter to the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) in response to being invited by the group to attend their annual banquet in Orlando. Though Bush declined the invitation, he wished the group continued success and was quite effusive in his praise.

About Dr. O?Neal Dozier?
Dr. O?Neal Dozier is an attorney, an ordained minister and a former professional football player with the Chicago Bears. Yet, as a patriotic American, he still found time to serve two consecutive terms in the U.S. military.

Although today Dr. Dozier is a nationally known black conservative who has even been invited to The White House to pray with President Bush, Rev. Dozier comes from very humble roots and tries to remain humble with a servant?s heart.

O?Neal Dozier was born fourth out of eleven children on September 3, 1948 to sharecroppers Annie Dozier and the late Jessie Emmanuel Dozier. In 1955, his family left South Carolina and came to Pompano Beach, Florida on a migrant farm bus. ?Rev. Dozier went on to graduate from Blanche Ely High School in 1967, where he was a soloist in the Chorale and a member of the Football and Basketball Team.

Dr. Dozier received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion and Philosophy from Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida. ?Rev. Dozier played professional football in the National Football League for the Chicago Bears during the 1974 football season. He was then traded to the New York Jets, where he was subsequently waived because of injury. ?In addition, Rev. Dozier was a player/coach during the 1979 football season for the Alabama Vulcans (Birmingham, Alabama) of the American Football Association Professional Football League (A.F.A.).

Rev. Dozier served two consecutive terms in the United States Army. ?He later received a Doctor of Jurisprudence (Law Degree) from John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, Georgia. ?He also attended the Morehouse School of Religion Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia.

Rev. Dozier has been a licensed minister of the Gospel since 1975 and was ordained as a Baptist Minister of the Gospel in 1983. ?He founded The Worldwide Christian Center on July 18, 1985, where he continues to serve as Pastor of the church.

Rev. Dozier is no ordinary Pastor. ?He is a prayer warrior and teaches the Body of Christ how to pray to obtain results.? He does not compromise the Word of God, but preaches the Word of God with boldness and accuracy. ?He counsels those in need. ?He visits the sick and those who are imprisoned. ?He helps the poor and needy not only by donating to various missions throughout the community and throughout the world but also, in conjunction with Gateway Community Outreach operates a food pantry each Saturday at the church.

Rev. Dozier was a Professor of Law at Broward Community College and the Criminal Justice Institute of Broward Community College for three (3) years.? In 2001, Governor Bush appointed Rev. O?Neal Dozier for a two-year term to the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission, which screens and interviews applicants for Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Judgeships. In July, 2003, Governor Bush re-appointed Rev. Dozier to the same commission for an additional four-year term. In addition, in 2005 Governor Bush appointed Rev. Dozier to the Board of Directors of One Church, One Child of Florida, Inc. (adoption program).? In February of 2005, President George W. Bush invited Rev. Dozier to the White House for a private meeting with President Bush and twenty-three (23) other Black African American Leaders.? He is also the president of The Jerome E. Gray Republican Club of Broward County.? Rev. Dozier was honored to be chosen as a speaker for The Reclaiming America For Christ 2003 and 2005 Conferences hosted by Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where Dr. D. James Kennedy is the Senior Pastor.? Rev. Dozier was also listed as a member of The 2004 National Register of Who?s Who in Executives and Professionals.

>>> let's turn to chris matthews , host of msnbc's "hardball," good morning to you.

>> good morning, savannah.

>> as andrea pointed all indications are that susan rice will be the pick for secretary of state and all indications are that it would be a very ugly confirmation battle. is it worth it for the president to take on this fight, and at this point does he have any choice given how vigorously he's defended her?

>> officially the white house has not made a decision yet. i was told last night right at the top over there they haven't made a decision yet, but he clearly has to get some separation it seems from the fight over what happened in benghazi, the testimony she gave on "meet the press" in mid-september was and the issue of picking secretary of state. if he can separate the two issues by a couple of weeks. if he has to make the nomination right in the middle of this, we'll have an opening act to the second term which will be very messy and hot and not helpful.

>> would that be a fight worth having?

>> it will distract over the next couple of weeks. clear that the president has to win the battle over a fiscal cliff. he's got those on the left who doesn't think it is a cliff and he needs to get the business community to pus pressure on the republicans to get a deal before christmas. the president is playing it right so far, making it about the middle class and get the rich people to pay their taxes. it's really a tough fight. if this were his only fight it would be a tough fight.

>> let's turn back to rice for a moment and look at the substance of that. she acknowledged was what she did was repeat unclassified talking points that came from the intelligence communities. if she had classified information that was somehow different or would have added more to it, obviously she couldn't have said it on the sunday shows, but should she have been more direct that the information she was providing to the american people was at that point not just preliminary but incomplete? i guess the bottom line is did she mislead?

>> right. i think the big question -- it is a question. we don't have the answer. was she a flack out there in politics, mouthing the words that somebody told you, or is she a thoughtful cabinet minister to be a potential cabinet minister, and that's the big question because if she knew the classified didn't square with the unclassified, then she should have left some openings there, but from what i'm told she got the facts directly unchanged, unspun by the white house . nobody changed anything. if anybody's at fault here it's the intelligence community for giving her incomplete information for their own purposes. by the way, this story remains murky for a reason. i only say in politics if it's better than it looks, they will tell you. if it's worse than it looks, we have a cia operation going on in benghazi we're still covering up, and that's what they don't want to talk about.

>> chris matthews , we'll see how it it develops, thank you. catch chris on "hardball" weeknights at 5:00 and 7:00 on msnbc. matt?

Goal Setting is Crucial | Self Help Tip of the Day

The benefits associated with goal setting do not only accrue to the professionals.

To succeed in life, goal setting is paramount.

Each and every successful person acknowledges the weight of goal setting.

Successful lawyers, athletes and doctors have in one way or another set goal in their lives.

Another benefit that accrues to goal setting is that goals act as vision.

'Dancing' finalists dish on freestyles post show

By Michael Maloney, TODAY contributor

ABC

"Dancing" finalists Melissa Rycroft, Kelly Monaco and Shawn Johnson.

It?s been said that the "Dancing With the Stars" freestyle dance can be the deciding factor in determining the competition?s winner. (Remember last season?s showstopper by Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd to "I Play Chicken With the Train"?)

But the question remains: Will audiences respond positively to Kelly and Val?s "Dirty Dancing" routine to "Time of My Life"? Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani?s contemporary dance? Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough?s number that incorporated five of her fellow Olympic gymnast pals?

?Our dance was very appropriate,? Chmerkovskiy said backstage after the show. ?Kelly?s and my season has a lot of parallels with that movie. She was counted out, pre-season. I was somebody?s younger sibling.?Now, I finally have my own voice and spotlight. The song was perfect.?

None of the finalists went overboard with the expanded perimeters they were given for their freestyles. But Chmerkovskiy complemented his and Monaco?s performance by playing violin.

?I?m very grateful to my parents for forcing me to stick with it,? he said. ?It?s probably not the sexiest thing to whip out when you?re 17 and serenade a girl with, but at 26 ...?

?It pays off,? Monaco chimed in.

Of dancing with the Fierce Five, Johnson said, ?I trained with those girls for three years and to be on the stage with them meant everything.?

She also gives high marks to Hough for her performances and growth this season. ?He gave me everything back ? my confidence, my pride and my passion for finding something I love to do.?

Rycroft said that since the "All Stars" season has been about doing things that have never been done before (Knight Rider Bhangra, anyone?) she and Dovolani chose a contemporary theme for their freestyle.

?It was a risk,? Rycroft said. ?In season eight, we did something that was comfortable and easy. Competing against Shawn and Derek and Kelly and Val, well, we thought we needed to do something!?

Still, Dovolani was careful not to let the added extras overshadow his partner.

?I didn?t want to take any focus away from Melissa,? he said after the show. ?The trapeze artists (we used) were fantastic. But my goal was to celebrate Melissa?s journey.?

The "All-Stars" winner won?t be announced until Tuesday evening, but there?s already speculation about next season?s stars, including one of Johnson?s fellow Olympic gymnasts.

?Tony?s already working on it,? joked Rycroft. ?He was sizing them up saying, ?Oh, you?re the right height!? ?

Hearty organisms discovered in bitter-cold Antarctic brine

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Where there's water there's life -- even in brine beneath 60 feet of Antarctic ice, in permanent darkness and subzero temperatures.

While Lake Vida, located in the northernmost of the McMurdo Dry Valleys of East Antarctica, will never be a vacation destination, it is home to some newly discovered hearty microbes. In the current issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Nathaniel Ostrom, Michigan State University zoologist, has co-authored "Microbial Life at -13?C in the Brine of an Ice-Sealed Antarctic Lake."

Ostrom was part of a team that discovered an ancient thriving colony, which is estimated to have been isolated for more than 2,800 years. They live in a brine of more than 20 percent salinity that has high concentrations of ammonia, nitrogen, sulfur and supersaturated nitrous oxide ?- the highest ever measured in a natural aquatic environment.

"It's an extreme environment -- the thickest lake ice on the planet, and the coldest, most stable cryo-environment on Earth," Ostrom said. "The discovery of this ecosystem gives us insight into other isolated, frozen environments on Earth, but it also gives us a potential model for life on other icy planets that harbor saline deposits and subsurface oceans, such as Jupiter's moon Europa."

On Earth's surface, water fuels life. Plants use photosynthesis to derive energy. In contrast, at thermal vents at the ocean bottom, out of reach of the sun's rays, chemical energy released by hydrothermal processes supports life.

Life in Lake Vida lacks sunlight and oxygen. Its high concentrations of hydrogen gas, nitrate, nitrite and nitrous oxide likely provide the chemical energy used to support this novel and isolated microbial ecosystem. The high concentrations of hydrogen and nitrous oxide gases are likely derived from chemical reactions with the surrounding iron-rich rocks.

Consequently, it is likely that the chemical reactions between the anoxic brine and rock provide a source of energy to fuel microbial metabolism. These processes provide new insights into how life may have developed on Earth and function on other planetary bodies, Ostrom said.

The research team comprised scientists from the Desert Research Institute (Reno, Nev.), the University of Illinois-Chicago, NASA, the University of Colorado, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Montana State University, the University of Georgia, the University of Tasmania and Indiana University.

Sassy Molassy: Mental Health Monday

Oh hello, Monday... The long weekend was glorious, but it put me in serious "this is Christmas vacation" mode. Jonah Bell (our dog) was even groaning this morning as I got ready for work because she knew it meant she'd be alone all day. The rough life of a dog...?

Thanksgiving morning I headed out in all black for a peaceful run along the river with myself and a little NPR.

On my way to the river is this adorable little farmers market that I have yet to be able to visit. It's only open 10am to 6pm, summer through fall. Someday, I'll make it happen. I just love the look of the building.?

?The river and a little sun has a way of making everything right in the world.

There were several groups of people walking and running early that morning. I have opted not to race the past few years to save a little $$, but I do miss the festivity of a Thanksgiving morning turkey trot.?

I got home with 7 miles under my belt and ready for a Thanksgiving feast!

After I stretched and showered, we headed off to the Oregon coast to see my family. My cousin Brendel's boys are adorable and so well behaved at ages 2 and 3.
National Health Blog Post Month ?

Mental Health

This was a topic from last week that I didn't get a chance to touch on. Overall, I'm always amazed how much our mental health impacts our physical health. It's so easy in our society to deny that we're over stressed or that said stress could have other effects on our lives.

Often times, if I'm overly stressed, I'll feel a cold coming on within a few days. In addition to maintaining healthy habits (pumping Vitamin C, drinking water, sleeping well), I also try to find ways to naturally destress by way of yoga or walks.

Ideally, I'd never get to this place where I'm sick because of stress, but only because I happen to catch a cold from someone else. As I see stress increasing, I have to be proactive in finding ways to chill out mentally and physically.

And what if you're dealing with something that you alone can't solve??

In college, I went to a therapist at the University's counseling center for a year or so and it was extremely helpful. From day one, she was my ally and didn't judge me for my thoughts or feelings. She was simply there to listen and provide suggestions as to how to deal with/overcome things.

From that experience, I walked away thinking that everyone should see a therapist, no matter how small or large the things they're dealing with are. My counselor allowed me to feel more confident about myself and my beliefs and fully explore thoughts and issues I was dealing with. Who couldn't benefit from that kind of support?

The manfriend and I are also going to a little pre-marital counseling (which I'll talk about a bit more soon) so that we're best prepared for our journey together. While it's not typical "therapy," it has been a great way to discuss topics or feelings we might not normally dive into.?

What are your thoughts on mental health, staying mentally healthy, etc?

The 12 Companies Paying Americans The Least: 24/7 Wall St.

24/7 Wall St.:

The gap between rich and poor is well illustrated by the large multi-billion dollar corporations employing thousands of low-wage workers. With the Great Recession over, not only are many of these companies now hitting record profits, but their executive pay remains spectacularly high. Meanwhile, according to a report released by the National Employment Law Project, the current federal minimum wage the workers are often paid, is worth 30% less than it was in 1968 in terms of purchasing power.

Web Linked TVs - The Idiot Container Smartens Up | Hugo Hosting

Wise TV evolutionThe hope of our TVs have modified ? we now expect our set to accomplish far more than just show through broadcast TV channels. People have been offered a taste of a vast array of online information provided through TELEVISION sets, enabling the viewing of programs that will have been overlooked through apps such as Plus7 and I-View, and ?renting? of era streaming video right from the TV from apps such as Bigpond TV. Material that individuals traditionally only used on our PC is currently made available to us through our TV sets, Blu-Ray people and Home Theatre systems ? closing the distance between internet and TV.MoviesOne of the most desirable abilities of Smart Televisions is the capability to flow films via the internet right onto our big screen. This has revolutionised the manner in what sort of lot of people are accessing their films, with the video shop leasing sector starting to experience the force. Actually Samsung have just announced they have closed a deal with hit to create more shows to Samsung devices. The new Blockbuster loading support is expected to land in the US and Europe in early 2012, and in Australia by September.Bigpond Movies has been available on Samsung and LG TV?s for a few decades now, and this shows an accumulation of thousands of new release and back catalog brands which are streamed to your TV via the internet. Forget about leaving your house to attend the video store, or amassing late charges for that disc you neglected to return.Quickflix has been available on Sony TVs and Blu-Ray participants previously, and thanks to a current deal Samsung join Sony in merging with the web DVD membership service and creating a software that enables Australian consumers to supply video content to their Samsung Smart TVs.Sony also bring us their own streaming service ? Video on Demand, giving late discharge shows in the possibility of HD or a cheaper SD type ? for those of us who do not have the fastest web speeds available or just securing our wallets.Consumers are also starting to use up companies such as Telstra?s T-box and Optus? related service FetchTV, over traditional cable or satellite connections from Foxtel and Austar. This has developed into a million dollar business in Australia ? with just growth estimate into the near future. There can be various Multimedia units available on the marketplace such as Apple TELEVISION, Boxee and WD Live so we now have the largest solution of internet content made available for people to watch on our TV screens than we?ve ever had before. Two of the better Media centres have appeared from Sony?s PlayStation and Microsoft?s Xbox, with the latter also recently in a position to supply a wide collection of Foxtel routes including movies and sports via the net. Both also have video loading companies available.TelevisionSmart connectivity also opens up several choices for people in terms of tv stations. Almost every major television supplier has ABC?s common I-View application pre packed within their menus. ABC iview is really a hook up support offering the very best of ABC TELEVISION. You can watch your favourite applications entirely display at your leisure. Most exhibits are open to watch for fourteen days and new applications are included every day.Another ever current software in just about any Smart TV?s toolbox is PLUS7. As observed on Seven, 7mate and other information associates plus7, from Yahoo and Channel 7, gives video internet of total length episodes. High quality, total display videos are available for immediate loading. New attacks are included daily and are available for up to 28 days after the atmosphere. It is possible to stop, forward and rewind programmes, and all available to watch on your TV completely display. An email reminder service is also included by plus7 and that means you do not miss out on seeing shows before they terminate. There?s also the option to share films with friends via email and Facebook.BBC?s Iplayer is another Video On Demand company which provides access to the mass of the BBC?s massive television racks, with over 1000 hours being offered at launch and ?hours? of extra video being ?regularly added.? Content available include Documentaries, BBC News, Entertainment, Drama, Science and Nature, as well as Music and Kids, Family and Culture and Comedy and Lifestyle. There?s also an of the BBCs best exports such as Doctor Who, Little Britain, A Bit of Laurie and Fry, Absolutely Fabulous and more.Bigpond TELEVISION can be obtained through LG Smart TVs and Samsungs related TVs (with net at TV purpose). This is also exactly the same support made available through Telstra?s T-Box. Bigpond TV is just a TV channel streaming service which gives us with routes like NRL TV, AFL TV, Bigpond News, Bigpond Sport and Bigpond music and more. According to a study undertaken by independent telecom research firm Telsyte, One in five subscription TV services in Australia are shipped via broadband, and they forecast that by 2015, one third of Pay TV services will be over broadband networks. This is an clear problem for cable subscription businesses Foxtel and Austar. Austar, in particular, has received a large drop in fortune since it faces increasing competition from cheaper Internet TV rivals like FetchTV, iiNet and Internode ? available from as little as $10 a month. With the streamed Internet TV content available from Smart TVs like films and new discharge TV shows, as well as many new free-to-air electronic channels ? in comparison to a wire subscription which starts at $45 monthly plus possible expenses for the container, customers are voting with their accessories en masse.MusicTelevision giants Sony and Samsung can both have music loading solutions available on their Smart TVs, with Samsungs shortly to be introduced ?Music Hub? set to revolutionise the connection between our music and our products like never before.Samsung?s Music Hub gives us access to shared music without the need to download and exchange content from one unit to some other, with the support becoming available on Samsung smart TVs, Samsung smart home theatres and smart Blu-rays by mid-December. The music heart gives homeowners of Smart TVs, Smart Home Theatre and Smart Blu Ray participants use of significantly more than 10,000 music videos with the advanced subscription. The engineering shops music playlists in a, and music may be accessed from individual units everywhere in Australia where there is a net connection available. A neat purpose is the ?follow me? function, allowing customers to begin with hearing located music through a cell phone, before picking up the exact same playlist again if they get home through their TV.Sony?s Music unlimited has been designed for a couple of months today, on devices, Bravia Smart TVs, Ps3, and Sony PCs and tablets. More Than 10 million tracks are available on demand, from independent designers to blockbusting stars. Thousands of new songs are added regular, and you can change and create an infinite amount of playlists, as well as pay attention to any track you want as usually as you want. There are internet radio programs considered by Genre, Era or Mood. You can ?Like? or ?Dislike? trails to customise channels to your own personal preference, and you likewise have the ability to develop new channels based on your favourite artists. How Smarter will Smart TVs be this year?Viewers will be ready to control their TV using experience recognition, plus touch and speech adjustments and move far from the original TV remote control ? in an identical vane to Microsoft?s XBox Kinect. LG and Samsung both proven Voice and gesture controls in their next generation televisions at CES 2012.Samsung?s new 8 sequence TV, the ES8000, has gesture recognition incorporated ? with a camera which recognises hand-gestures motivating it to change station, modify amount, go an cursor and more.Samsung and LG both add voice control in some versions within their 2012 line up. Existing LG Smart TELEVISION entrepreneurs may be familiar with the Magic Motion Remote, that allows a cursor to be controlled by you on the screen in a similar fashion to how a Nintendo Wii control works. In 2010 might find an upgrade to voice recognition is now delivered by the Magic Motion remote which operation. A microphone in the rural directs your style to your Smart TV ? permitting an individual to web-search, tweet and make Facebook threads all with spoken words.Panasonic allow us a ?flick? engineering, and they believe it will start brand new ways of displaying material from our mobile devices in ideal picture quality on a Viera TV. This will alter the connection between our devices, permitting us to only ?flick? content to remotely broadcast photos, films, and websites from Android or Apple items directly to the TV.Another important feature returning is the ability to upgrade your TV with upcoming functionality, without the necessity to get a brand new TV. That will generally be in the form of an upgrade slot at the back of the TV and you?ll manage to acquire upgrade ?kits? while they become required and available.Google have announced that LG, Sony, and Vizio will be parading Google TV products at CES 2012, with Samsung developing with Google TV later in the year, with Apple also rumoured to be production TVs including 37? ? 50?, and described iTV functions such as Siri-powered handles, iOS application support, AirPlay, iCloud support and heavy iTunes integration.Sony have announced two Google TV add-on boxes in the form of a Blu-ray player and a network media player. These will ship in Europe and America quickly, and the rest of the world can expect them to move out after ward. Both containers have a completely new rural, having a backlit QWERTY keyboard with touchpad. The remote can also work as a widespread remote for other devices, as the Blu-ray person also supports speech search.Death of the idiot boxThe intention and vision of tv companies has now progressed far beyond just providing us a great picture quality. The capability to seamlessly link our press, whether it be on our telephones, capsules or computers, with your Home Televisions is becoming of vital importance. Various new content, in the shape of purposes brimming with Movies, Television and Music is transferring us far from the traditional way we digest such content ? setting heavy pressure on industries such since the traditional Video and Music Stores, and Cable / Pay TELEVISION businesses like Foxtel and Austar. What we used to have to keep your house for, we now have at the wave of our hand. The days of the remote are fast disappearing, actually the days of employing a remote get a handle on are disappearing entirely. The idiot container has ultimately smartened up!

Report: Oklahoma's Deadliest Jobs In 2011

TULSA, Oklahoma -

Each year the Oklahoma Department of Labor in cooperation with the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other government agencies, releases a fatal occupational injuries report showing the deadliest jobs in Oklahoma.

Preliminary numbers from the latest report, for 2011, show there were 77 work-related deaths in Oklahoma.

A vast majority, or 69 out of 77, were in the private sector.

The fifth deadliest job in the state is in the food service industry, including bars, restaurants, and caterers. There were 3 deaths in 2011.

Number four and three are tied, under the category of truck transportation. Seven truck drivers died last year; 6 in traffic-related incidents.

Manufacturing was number three with seven people losing their lives. It's one of the most dangerous jobs in the state.?But some companies are working to change that,?like T and L Foundry in Glenpool, run by third-generation family owner, Bill Covington.

"You know, the nature of that, it's a hot, dirty business that you know has a lot of dangers like that," said Bill Covington.

T and L makes aluminum vents and light pole stands that are shipped across the country. It's?won the prestigious SHARP safety award two years in a row, the first foundry in the state to do that.

"Because we invested in safety and spent money on safety, it's paid great dividends. Our workers' comp this year could be reduced by as much as $100,000," said Bill Covington.

Coming in at number two on the dangerous jobs list in Oklahoma was construction.

Twelve workers in the construction field died on the job last year, about half from transportation incidents and the other half from falls, slips or trips.

Number one was in the oil and gas business.

Fourteen fatalities were recorded in drilling and support operations for oil and gas wells, in incidents ranging from transportation to contact with equipment.

"The number one problem is the awareness, that there are programs of safety that are free, that are voluntary and that work. And there's no downside to them," said Mark Costello, state Labor Commissioner.

Oklahoma Department of Labor commissioner Mark Costello says private companies can invite the department in, get free consultation on safe practices, and on top of that, the state Labor Department can't fine them.

"Safety isn't a ?gotcha' moment from the feds or the Department of Labor," said Mark Costello. "We want them to go home in the same safe condition as they arrived at work. Once they realize that, it has manifest benefits throughout a company, not just to the bottom line."

In the Labor Department report there were other industries that had more than three deaths, like professional and technical services, but the causes were so broad and included so many different lines of work, we?didn't include them.

See the entire list from the Oklahoma Department of Labor.

Thread: Candy dispenser project. It's a success! - Family Woodworking

LOL

It's about 10"w and 11"h. I wanted to prove the concept before going too large. It is operational and works well, I just think of it as more of a decoration to sit out on a table during the holidays. I've got lots of ideas now for other designs.

EDIT:

Language Log ? The American Heritage Dictionary of the English ...

? previous post |

As soon as I heard that the 5th edition of The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (AHD) had come out, I rushed to the nearest Barnes & Noble bookstore (yes, they still exist ? that was Borders that closed) and plunked down two Bens (hundred dollar bills) to buy three copies at $60 each:? one for my office at Penn, one for my study at home, and one for a friend.? The 5th ed. was actually published in November, 2011, but I was in China then, and didn't get a chance to buy my own copies until the day I arrived back on American soil.

I own at least one copy of each of the five editions of AHD; in most cases, I own multiple copies and all the available formats.? In fact you could say that I'm an "AHD k?ng ? / otaku"? ("AHD obsessive"). If it didn't sound too weird, I'd say that I'm in love with the AHD, but it does sound weird, so I won't admit that.? But I will confess that AHD, from the first edition, has always been my "number one" reference work and, if I were going to be exiled to Xinjiang or Siberia or marooned on a desert island, the one book, indeed, the single belonging that I would want to take with me, would ? without any hesitation whatsoever ? be the AHD.

All right, since everybody is probably thinking that Mair has become touched in the head, I'd better explain myself a bit.? After all, I do have my reasons for being so enamored of the AHD.? First and foremost is "Appendix I:? Indo-European Roots".? Whoever initially got the idea to include this appendix is a genius; we are all forever in their debt.? Second is "Appendix II: Semitic Roots", which I think first appeared in the 4th edition.? The third reason is that the essentials of the precious data in appendices I and II are incorporated into the etymologies for the main entries and in separate word histories.? The fourth reason is the careful attention paid to the evolution of the alphabet, both at the beginning of each letter and in an excellent table (on p. 51 of AHD5).? The list of my reasons for worshipping the AHD could be extended indefinitely:? the brilliant chart of Indo-European languages on the endpapers, the 4,000+ full-color illustrations, the up-to-date vocabulary, the superb usage notes, the splendid essays on Indo-European and Proto-Semitic language and culture respectively by Calvert Watkins and John Huehnergard, and so forth.

As a Sinologist, however, I am particularly indebted to the AHD for taking Chinese and other East Asian languages seriously and doing such a good job with them.? Much of the credit for this goes to Senior Lexicographer, Patrick Taylor, with whom I engaged in extensive discussion during the decade of editing that went into the making of the 5th edition.? Our correspondence was occasioned by the fact that I was delighted by the inclusion of a word that I had coined in the 4th edition, namely, "topolect", but disappointed that the definition given was not what I had intended.? On p. 1822a of the 4th edition, we find this definition:? "A set of similar dialects constituting any of the larger distinct regional varieties of a language.? For example, Mandarin Chinese is a topolect that includes the dialects of Beijing and Nanjing, and is distinct from Hakka, another topolect of Chinese."? Unfortunately, this definition signifies essentially what Chinese linguists mean by d? f?ngy?n ??? ("large / major topolect"), whereas what I had intended was simply no more and no less than what the Chinese mean by f?ngy?n ?? ("speech form of a place", i.e., "topolect" ? whether large or small).? I maintain that "dialect" is a serious mistranslation of f?ngy?n ??, one that has wreaked endless havoc in linguistic analysis of Sinitic languages.? In a forthcoming paper that will appear in the Festschrift for Alain Peyraube, I explain in detail what is wrong with the mistaken equation of f?ngy?n ?? and "dialect", and propose alternative renderings.

I should also note that the outstanding coverage of East Asian languages in AHD5 in general owes much to Zev Handel, who was the Etymology Consultant for Chinese and Other East Asian Languages.

I think that I probably first used the word "topolect" in writing in What Is a Chinese ?Dialect/Topolect?? Reflections on Some Key Sino-English Linguistic Terms (Also available as a 2.2 MB PDF.), Sino-Platonic Papers, 29 (September, 1991), 1-31, though I had been using the term in lectures already during the previous decade.

In AHD5, "topolect" is now defined thus:

The language or speech of a particular place, such as a country, region, village, or valley, especially:? a. Any of the Sinitic languages, such as Mandarin or Cantonese.? b. Any of the regional and local varieties of one of the Sinitic languages, such [as] one of the dialects of Mandarin.

I am satisfied with this definition.

A couple of years ago, the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary informed me that they were going to include "topolect" in the OED.? I am interested in seeing how they define it.? No matter how it turns out, I'm grateful to AHD4 for making topolect a matter of record and AHD5 for defining it correctly and integrating it in their treatment of Sinitic languages as a whole.
