Treating your child's ear infection naturally

Children tend to be more susceptible to ear infections due to the structure of their ears. As they grow, the Eustachian tube curves downward allowing fluids to drain more easily. Until then, many suffer from recurring ear infections.

While an older child can verbalize what?s wrong an infant or toddler will indicate a problem by tugging, rubbing or hitting ears and fussing and crying. Another symptom to watch for is a feeling of fullness or pressure caused by excess fluid pushing on the eardrum. Slight hearing loss may also occur in the affected ear.

There are a number of homeopathic remedies, which can effectively relieve ear infections. For example:

If your child has a fever with a red face, dilated pupils, hot moist skin and an earache that comes on suddenly the remedy Belladonna often works well.

Ferrum Phosphoricum is great for treating ear infections with a fever.

For infants and toddlers that have an earache due to teething, Chamomilla has proven effective.

If none of the above symptoms match your child, or if you are unsure, it is always best to come into the clinic to get a remedy that is completely individualized to your child.

You can also help relieve your child?s symptoms by propping his or her head up at a 30-degree angle to promote drainage and relieve pressure in the ears. A warm or cold compress on the ear can be soothing as well. Also, try massaging your child?s ear by using gentle pressure along the back of the ear and down the back of the jawbone. Push and release the flap of skin in front of the ear several times. Place the fleshy part of your palm over your child?s ear and rotate your hand in all directions.

If your child experiences sudden pain with drainage from the ear, take him or her to a doctor immediately as he or she may have a perforated ear drum. You should also seek treatment from a doctor if they continue to suffer from a fever, chills, dizziness or hearing loss.
